Cloze Practice
The cloze practice page provides free advice for the MELICET cloze test. The MELICET cloze test is like a gap fill exercise. You will see a reading passage with 20 missing words. There will be multiple choice answers to the right of the passage or below the passage.
Before you try to place any words in the gaps, you should be sure to read the entire gapped passage. This well help you to understand the main idea of the passage.
Reading the passage will also help you to check the various sentence structures contained in the passage and to understand the way that the ideas in the cloze passage are linked together.
Then return to the beginning of the reading passage and start to place words in the gaps. Now, remember that you are going to need to use the skills often taught an English grammar tutorial or English grammar lesson in English Language Schools, such as those from English grammar courses or general English language courses, in order to complete the passage.
You may have been learning English grammar for quite some time. So you should think carefully about the grammar rules of the English language as you do your work. As you complete the gaps, carefully check sentence structure. English language learners need to ask questions about English grammar as they complete the cloze, such as:
What is the grammatical subject of this sentence?
Does the sentence have a verb?
Or is the gapped word going to be placed in the position of the main verb?
Is there an article (a, an or the) before this gap?
If so, does the gap require a noun?
Or should the gap take an adjective?
